Annual Growth Survey 2014, European Research Area and Space Policy, the focus of COMPET Council

Today Friday, 21 February 2014, the first Competitiveness Council/Research and Space part, during the Greek Presidency of the European Council, was held here in Brussels. The Council was chaired by the Secretary General for Research and Technology of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs Dr Christos Vasilakos.

The main Agenda items, discussed today, were the Annual Growth Survey 2014, the European Research Area (ERA) progress report, and issues related to Space Policy and the frame of cooperation between the European Union and the European Space Agency.

Greek Presidency to represent the EU at the G20 meeting in Sydney (21-23 February)

The G20 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors meeting on 21-23 February in Sydney is the first G20 Finance meeting of 2014 where the Council is represented by the Greek Presidency. The EU is also represented by the European Commission and the European Central Bank. Secretary General of the Ministry of Finance, Mrs. Christina Papaconstantinou, heads the Presidency delegation.

EU Defence ministers support the way forward for CSDP and EU operations

The informal meeting of EU Defence Ministers took place on 20 and 21 February in Athens, chaired by Greek Minister of National Defence Dimitris Avramopoulos on behalf of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton. It consisted of three working sessions dedicated respectively to the follow up to the European Council on security and defence, ongoing EU operations, and the situation in the Central African Republic. The NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen and the UN Undersecretary General for Peacekeeping Herve Ladsous attended parts of the meeting.

COMPET Council meeting – Day 2 (21.02.2014)

On the second day of the COMPET, the Council will hold a debate on the research and innovation aspects in relation to the Annual Growth Survey for 2014. Following the first report on the progress towards the implementation of the European Research Area (ERA), the Council will be invited to adopt conclusions on key elements that will contribute to the completion of the ERA. In the afternoon, the Council will exchange views on how to better develop the relationship between the EU and the European Space Agency (ESA).
